Getting in Shape
Published January 17th, 2006 in AthleticsWell now that I am married, have a kid, pay property taxes, and am losing my hair I’ve started down the path of being a lazy fat old man. What use to consume my time (playing in multiple basketball/volleyball/softball/football leagues, going to the gym, working out with medicine balls/strength shoes/bungees and treadmills from hell at Acceleration have been replaced with changing diapers, competing with my wife while watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune from 6-7pm every night, managing my investments in my 401k and IRAs, and about the only exercise I get is running back and forth to the thermostat as I battle my wife to keep the temperature below 70 so the heating bill is lower so I can invest more money in my 401k so I can retire early and watch more jeopardy and wheel of fortune.
Well going back to the first post in my blog from a year ago I had just competed in the annual alumni basketball tournament and basically got my butt kicked my a bunch of young punks who know nothing about basketball but who were able to make it up and down the court more than 3 times without going to the bench for some oxygen and a jolt from the portable defibulator. Well this year was pretty much the same story and I think the entire class of 98 vowed to get in shape for next year (just like we did last year, but this year were SERIOUS!!)
Well for some reason I couldn’t get back to sleep after getting up to get Jack at 3:30am (yeah that’s right despite what Betsy says I get up in the middle of the night with my son)….well anyway I’ve never had much of a problem not being able to sleep ever, so I figured it must be a sign that I needed to get up and do something. Well after about a half hour checking on my 401k and IRAs, I decided I should head into my work at 5:30am and pump some iron before heading to my actual place of work (I’m working offsite currently). Well that would have been a lot of driving and well I honestly haven’t touched a weight in the 2.5 years I have been married so I figured I’d likely hurt/kill myself if I tried to lift anything heavy.
So I figured I’d just do an easy workout to get myself going before I tried to actual lift anything. So I threw on some music and started doing pushups, situps, and tricep thingys. Well the music got the adrenaline flowing and I pumped out 15 pushups, 15 situps, and 15 tricep thingys. Waited about two minutes tried to go through the rotation again….12 pushups…..6 situps……7 tricep thingys…..done. I could barely breath, the room was spinning, and I no longer had the use of my arms for the rest of the day.
Now I have no intention of looking like this, although after my workout this morning I’m feeling like I may need to start buying bigger shirts to prevent me from accidentally flexing and busting through them. Actually I just hope to not let myself go entirely to hell. I’d just like to stay in basic athletic shape so I don’t suck at sports the few times a year I play them and still being able to dunk a basketball while in my 30s would be nice.
Anyway I’m getting in shape this year for REAL
